Supplement use is a widespread and accepted practice by athletes, with a high prevalence of use and a large range of different types and brands of products. The decision of an athlete to use a specific supplement should only be made after careful consideration of several issues such as safety, legality and is it actually going to improve performance.

It is very common to observe athletes taking a chaotic pattern of supplements and a never ending range of products that claim to provide benefits to improve sporting performance. The poor regulation of sports supplements in many countries allows athletes and coaches to be the target of marketing campaigns based on exaggerated claims.

However scientific studies have identified a number of products that can potentially offer benefits to performance and helping to meet nutritional requirements.
