Eating for Sports
The goal of any athlete is to perform to their optimum level,
and there are a range of factors that can cause performance levels to drop.
Poor nutritional practices in the preparation for, and recovery from competition
is one of the main factors as to why performance levels can drop in sport.
Eating correctly to optimize performance in sport is based on the principle
of implementing realistic nutritional strategies that aim to reduce and delay
the factors that cause fatigue or a decline in performance. Eating for sport
includes special eating practices which are undertaken before, during and after
events to keep the athlete in the best possible condition for competition.
A good training diet must include some of the following goals:
- Realistic strategies which incorporate the enjoyment of food is key to success.
- To keep the athlete healthy with a diet that contains all the key nutrients required for health as well as meeting the demands of their sport.
- To monitor and adjust body fat and muscle, body mass and hydration levels that are recommended for sport.
- To provide adequate amounts of fuel for training sessions and events.
- To implement good hydration strategies.
- To ensure nutrition strategies are implemented to enable recovery after exercise.
- To tailor the sports diet to each athletes individual sport and needs.
