General Practitioners
As a General Practitioner you will be involved in the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, while providing preventative care and health education for all ages of the population. Many diseases and medical conditions such as hyperlipidaemia, diabetes, weight management, GI disorders (see therapy search in general nutrition link) can be successfully managed and controlled through the utilization of the skills of a fully registered and qualified dietitian who can work to compliment the skills of the general practitioner in a multi-disciplinary manner.
The role of the dietitian is to use her/his knowledge of food, nutrition, and science to promote health, prevent disease and aid in the management of illnesses and advise on weight management and general healthy living. The dietitian will assess the nutritional status of patients, calculate individual nutritional requirements, design a plan of care to meet these nutritional requirements and educate patients/families on special and health promoting diets or nutrition support.
The dietitian can also be used by the GP to successfully nutritionally screen patients deemed to be at risk of malnutrition by using or training the GP to use the MUST screening tool.
